こんな時だからじっくり本を読もう!特に原書絵本を読みましょう!第2弾です。
今回は『かいじゅうたちのいるところ』センダックというアメリカ人の作品を紹介します。
題名から英語との違いがあります。原書絵本の題名はWhere The Wild Things Are で、「かいじゅう」が実は、‟the wild things”(野生の/荒々しいものたち)ですね。本屋さんには必ずと言っていいくらい置いてありますので、読み比べてみてもいいでしょう。
もう一つ、ファンタジー作品についても考えてみましょう。皆さんの方がくわしいのかもしれませんが、Fantasyとは空想物語のことで、普通の生活をしていて、ある時空想の世界に入り、また、普通の生活に戻るというお話ですね。名作としては『不思議の国のアリス』『ナルニア国物語』があるし、アニメーションでは『千と千尋の神隠し』『未来のミライ』があります。絵本では、この『かいじゅうたちの-』が代表的な作品なのです。
では、以下に原書の英文を載せましたので、じっくり読んでみましょう! あっ、プラス質問です。『君の名は。』やTVで人気が出た『テセウスの船』は、ファンタジー作品としては一線を画す(異なる)ものと考えられています。なぜでしょうか?

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (1963年)
The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind mischief: 悪戯
and another
his mother called him “WILD THING!”
and Max said “I’LL EAT YOU UP!”
so he was sent to bed without eating anything.
That very night in Max’s room a forest grew
and grew-
and grew until his ceiling hung with vines ceiling: 天井
and the walls became the world all around
and an ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max tumble: ひっくり返る
and he sailed off through night and day sail off: 船で行く
and in and out of weeks
and almost over a year
to where the wild things are.
And when he came to the place where the wild things are
they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth roar: うなる/うなり
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws gnash: 歯ぎしりする
claw: かぎつめ
till Max said “BE STILL!”
and tamed them with the magic trick tame: 飼いならす
of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once stare: じっと見る
and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all frighten: 怖がらせる
and made him king of all wild things.
“And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!” rumpus: 騒ぎ
“Now stop!” Max said and sent the wild things off to bed
without their supper. And Max the king of all wild things was lonely
and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.
Then all around from far away across the world all around: いたるところ
he smelled good things to eat
so he gave up being king of where the wild things are.
But the wild things cried, “Oh please don’t go-
we’ll eat you up-we love you so!”
And Max said, “No!”
The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye step into: ~に飛び乗る
and sailed back over a year
and in and out of weeks
and through a day
and into the night of his very own room
where he found his supper waiting for him
and it was still hot.
