学校生活と文化の違い

  私のアメリカ生活は２ヶ月目に入り、順調にいっています。学校が私の生活の中心となり、そこで私は、日本では経験したことのないことをたくさん経験しています。このレポートでは、アメリカと日本の学校生活と文化の違いについてお話しします。違いはたくさんありますが、今回はそのごく一部です。

  最初に、アメリカの高校には日本のように学年を三クラスなどに分けません。登校したら、ホームルームなしで一時間目の授業に向かいます。他学年の生徒と一緒の授業になることもあります。そのため、たくさんの生徒が他学年と交流します。上級生と下級生は友達になれますし、お互いをよく知っています。素晴らしいと思いました。

  第二に、こちらでは授業で議論の時間を多く持ちます。特に、歴史や政府の授業の場合、社会問題や授業で学んでいる内容について話し合います。アメリカの授業は人々の意見や他者とのコミュニケーションをとても大切にします。私はこれはとても重要なことだと思うので、アメリカ滞在期間中この力を上達させたいと思います。

  第三に、こちらの学校にはスタディホールがあります。これは私がアメリカの学校で一番好きなものの一つです。昼食後、私たちはスタディホールに行き、自分の好きなことをする時間にします。課題や宿題を終わらせたり、テスト勉強の時間にできるのでとても良いです。中には、リラックスして午後の授業の準備をする人もいます。

  次に、アメリカの文化について話します。 9月の金曜日に2回、私たちの学校でフットボールの試合がありました。皆が一緒に大きな声で応援していて、見ていて素晴らしいと思いました。私はマーチングバンドに所属していて、演奏のためフットボールの試合に行きました。私たちのバンドが曲を演奏したり、チアリーダーの女子生徒が発表したりするとき、学校全体が団結しているようでした。これはアメリカ特有の文化だと感じました。

もうすぐ、ホームカミングと呼ばれるイベントがあります。それはもう一つの大きなアメリカ文化であり、学校で楽しいことがたくさん行われます。たとえば、ダンス、ドア装飾、ゲーム、缶フードドライブなどです。これらは学年対抗で行われます。缶フードドライブとは、缶詰食品、石鹸、洗剤、シャンプーなどを必要としている人々に寄付します。最も多く寄付できた学年が勝ちます。ホームカミングは人と人をつなぐ良い行事だと思います。

アメリカと日本の学校生活と文化の違いをこのように多く発見できて嬉しいです。それらの違いがそれぞれの国を特別なものにしているのだと思います。後り3ヶ月間のアメリカ滞在も楽しみたいです。

Differences in School Life and Culture

My second month in America has been going well. School has become the main thing in my life here and I have experienced things that I would not in Japan. For this report I would like to share with you the differences between American and Japanese schools and some American culture. There are quite a lot of differences, but I am going to just share a few.

First of all, in American high school we do not have our grade separated into three or more classes like in Japan. We do not have a homeroom and go straight to our first hour class every day. In our class you can have students from different grades or years all in the same class. Lower classmen and upper classmen are able to become friends and get to know each other very well.

 Second, American schools have a lot of discussion time incorporated in the class. Especially if it is a history or government class. They take a lot of time discussing about social issues that relate with what you are learning in class. American school classes really value people’s opinions and communication with others. I thought that was really important and I want to improve those skills during my time here.

Third, American schools have study halls. This is one of the best things I like in American schools. After lunch we go to our assigned study hall and we are free to use that time to do whatever we want. It is so nice because it can be a time when you can catch up on your work, finish your Homework, or study for a test. Some people even use it as a time to relax and be prepared for the afternoon classes.

Next, I am going to talk about American culture. In September for two of the Fridays, we had a football game at the school. Everyone is cheering and so connected with everyone else it was an amazing thing to see. One of the reasons I went to the football games was because I was a part of the marching band and got to perform. When our band played songs or the cheerleading girls performed, it was like the whole school was united together. I thought this is a very special culture that America has.

Coming soon we will have an event called homecoming at our school. It is another big American culture event. It is where the school does all sorts of fun activities like a dance, door decoration, games, and canned food drives. Our grade competes with other grades in these events. A canned food drive is where we buy canned foods, soap, detergent, or shampoo to donate to people in need. The grade that brings the most items wins. I think that homecoming is an amazing event to connect people and grow closer in relationship.

It was cool to see how countries have their differences in many ways. I think that is what makes a country special. I want to enjoy the rest of my three months in America.
