February report

This month has once again flown by at the speed of light.

Now that I only have four months left of my exchange program, I’ve started to think more seriously about what comes next. Looking back, I feel like this month was a turning point for me in that regard.

There were two big events this month.

The first one was a paintball game. WEP organized an orientation event for this year’s exchange students, and I had the opportunity to participate. It was similar to what we call “survival games” in Japan. We were divided into teams of about eight people and played three rounds, each with a different set of rules. To be honest, I had a hard time understanding all the rules, which made it quite challenging for me.

The second event was my host mom’s birthday. We didn’t have a big party, but we celebrated together by sharing a cake. I gave her a bracelet and a greeting card, and I was really happy to see that she liked them.

By the way, when I gave her the message card, she complimented my handwriting and said it was beautiful. Since I’ve been here, I’ve received similar compliments several times. This is because many Europeans have their own unique cursive handwriting, which can sometimes be difficult to read. I can write in cursive, as well, but most of the time I write in a style similar to that of Japan. It seems that this style stands out as unusual here. It’s fascinating to realize that what is “normal” to me can be perceived so differently in another culture. It’s a nice reminder of how diverse the world is.

There are a lot of things to think for my future, and I will do my best.

2月レポート

今月も光の速度で過ぎ去っていきました。

この留学も残り4ヶ月となり、いよいよ留学後のことについても本格的に考え始めた月だったなと思います。

さて今月は、大きく２つのことがありました。

一つ目はペイントボールです。WEPの主催で今年の留学生が参加できるオリエンテーションがあり、それに参加しました。日本でいうところのサバイバルゲームです。8人ほどのチームに分かれて、1回戦から3回戦まで3種類のルールで行いました。正直ルールが理解しきれずすごく難しかったです。

二つ目はホストマザーの誕生日です。大きなパーティはしませんでしたが、みんなでケーキを食べてお祝いしました。私からはブレスレットとメッセージカードをプレゼントしました。喜んでもらえたので嬉しかったです。

ここで余談なのですが、ホストマザーにメッセージカードを渡したとき綺麗な字だねと言ってもらいました。こっちに来てから何度も褒められるのですが少しむず痒いです。というのも、ヨーロッパ人はほとんどの人が独特の筆記体を持っていて正直読めない人もたくさんいます。自分は筆記体も書きますが、基本的には日本にいる時のようにバラバラで文字を書くのでこちらの人にとっては珍しいみたいです。自分にとっての普通も、文化が違えば違って見える、素敵なことだなと思いました。

留学も終わりに近づき考えることも増えますが、目の前のことに一生懸命頑張りたいです。
