<3rd month>

The school I attend finishes classes at 3:00 PM, and since it only takes about 10 minutes by school bus to get home, I have a lot of free time every day. Recently, I’ve been trying various things. First, I started baking. I often bake cakes. In Japan, there isn’t much free time after school, and it’s hard to gather the necessary tools, so it’s a refreshing experience to be able to do it here. My host sister from Germany is very skilled at baking, and she has taught me how to make many different cakes. I love sweets, so it’s really fun to make them and, of course, to eat them. Baking in English is challenging because there are difficult expressions in the conversation, but we take our time and figure it out together.

Another thing I’ve been learning is knitting. My host sister is also good at it, and she’s been teaching me. I’ve made small items like pouches for holding things and hair accessories. Every night, before going to bed, I sit with my grandparents and we chat while knitting. Even if I can’t speak fluently, it’s fun to share the day’s events in English, little by little.

Recently, I also started attending an English conversation class that a local agent recommended. There are people of all ages, not just students, and while it’s a bit nerve-wracking to talk to so many people, it’s a great experience. At school, there are students from many different countries, so the intonation of English varies a lot. Sometimes I have trouble understanding, and the different ways people speak or gesture give me a sense of the culture they come from. Despite this, it’s exciting to learn about the differences between so many countries, and every day feels full of new experiences.

＜３ヶ月目＞

　私の通っている学校は午後3時に授業が終わり、下校もスクールバスで10分ほどなので、毎日とても時間があります。そのため、最近は様々なことに挑戦しています。

まずはお菓子作りです。良くケーキを焼きます。日本ではあまり放課後時間がなく、さらに道具を揃えなければならないのであまり体験出来ないことで新鮮です。ドイツからのホストシスターがとてもお菓子作りが得意で、沢山のケーキを教えてくれて一緒に作っています。甘いものが大好きなので作るのもとても楽しいですし、食べるのも楽しいです。英語を使いながらのお菓子作りは難しい会話表現がありますがお互い時間をかけて理解しながら作っています。

他には編み物です。これもまたホストシスターが得意で教えてくれています。小物を入れられる巾着袋やヘア飾りを作りました。夜寝る前におばあちゃんとおじいちゃんの家で、みんなでお話ししながらするのが日課です。あまりスムーズに会話出来なくてもその日の出来事を英語で少しずつ話すのが楽しいです。

そして最近現地のエージェントの人に教えてもらった英会話教室に通い始めました。学生だけでなく大人の人もいて沢山の人とお話しできるので少し緊張しますがいい経験になります。英会話教室に限らず学校にも様々な国の人がいてそれによって英語のイントネーションがとても異なります。たまに聞き取れない時や話し方やジェスチャーの違いで文化を感じる事が良くあるなと思います。それでも沢山の国の違いを知れてワクワクする毎日です。
