Canada Hさん（November）

It has been three months since I came to Canada and I am already back home. The time has passed so fast. I saw a wild rabbit for the first time this month. Of course, I had never seen them in Japan, but I was surprised to see them in Canada for the first time this month. I was surprised to know that there are rabbits in Canada. My host mother said that it was a little bit late to get cold this year. I also thought it was quite warm, but it was not so last year according to my host mom. I thought that Canada is also really cold in winter. My feeling is that it gets really cold from November. It is cold even if I wear down coat.

And there was the most impressive event for me. Halloween. I was surprised. In Japan, we don’t dress up in costume at school, but in Canadian school, there were people who did. For example, some were dressed up as jokers or ghosts, some were dressed up and some were not. We also had trick-or-treating. I gave candies to the children. I had never done this before in Japan, so it was fun. I thought that culture is different from country to country. I am glad to have new experience in Canada. And it was such fun to give out sweets. It was so cute that little kids said “Trick or Treat.” I went to McDonald’s for the first time. And I had a Canadian specialty called “Poutine” for the first time. It was delicious. The hamburger tasted just like the one in Japan. I also had a MacFlurry. Unlike the one in Japan, there were three kinds. It was very delicious. I would like to have it again. November 11 is “Pocky Day” in Japan, but in Canada, it is called Remembrance Day. This day is the day when the armistice of the First World War was signed, and it is a national holiday that we should not forget. The poppy is worn on the left breast. The person who sang the national anthem had a beautiful voice.

The most memorable part of the class was dissecting a rat in the biology experiment. It was the first time for me to see a dissection, so I was a little surprised. I had never seen a rat before, so at first I was a little uncomfortable, but then I started to enjoy it. Also, it smelled bad. It had a unique smell. It was really interesting. There were a lot of experiments with living organisms here. I am glad that I was able to do all of them because they were interesting. There was one more thing I had trouble pronouncing, and that was “caramel.” I was a little sad because I couldn’t understand it at all, but the waiter asked me if it was this one and I was able to order it. I also went to Niagara Falls. This time we went to a place where we could see Niagara Falls from a close distance, so when we went there, there was a spray of water as if it was raining. It was interesting to see Niagara Falls from a close distance like this time. I was lucky enough to see a rainbow this time. I thought the waterfalls and the rainbow were mysterious.

I think what has changed since I came to study abroad is that my listening ability has changed compared to before I came here. I felt that my listening comprehension became easier. However, although I think my speaking ability has improved somewhat, I don’t think it has changed a great deal. I would like to continue studying English even after I return to Japan. I also wanted to be able to speak English better. Three months went by really fast, especially the last month. Even if my English skill was not changed, I was glad to come to Canada as a life experience. If I came to Canada as a traveler, I think I could touch other cultures only a little bit. But I think it is difficult to know many cultural differences in traveling. It was a valuable three months for me. Anyone can study abroad, but I am very grateful to my parents for allowing me to do so while I was in high school. I am very grateful to my parents. I am really glad that I was able to go on this study abroad program.

カナダに来て3ヶ月が経ちもう帰国になりました。本当に時間が過ぎるのがとても早かったです。今月初めて野生のうさぎを見ました。日本ではもちろん見たことがなかったのですが、カナダでは見たのは初めてで驚きました。うさぎもいるんだなと思いました。今年は寒くなるのが少し遅かったとホストマザーが言っていました。私も結構暖かいんだなと思ったのですが、去年はそんなことなかったみたいです。カナダも冬は本当に寒いのだなと思いました。私の感覚的には、11月から本格的に寒くなる気がします。ダウンコート着ていても寒いです。　

そして私が1番印象的だった行事があります。ハロウィンです。日本では学校では仮装をしませんがカナダの学校ではしている人がいて驚きました。例えば、ジョーカーやおばけだったり、仮装してる人もいればいない人もいました。そしてトリックオアトリートもやりました。私はお菓子を子供達に渡しました。日本ではやったことがなかったので楽しかったです。やっぱり国によって文化が違うんだなと思いました。カナダに来て新しい経験ができて嬉しいです。そしてお菓子を配るのはとても楽しかったです。やっぱり小さい子が「トリックオアトリート」と言うのが可愛かったです。

初めてマクドナルドに行きました。そしてそこで初めてプーティンというカナダの名物を食べました。美味しかったです。ハンバーガーは日本と同じ味でした。そしてフルーリーも食べました。日本とは違って3種類ありました。とてもおいしかったです。また食べたいと思いました。けれど日本とは違って少し高めでした。

11月11日は日本ではポッキーも日ですがカナダでは、remembrance day という日です。この日は第一次世界単線の休戦協定が結ばれた日で、忘れてはならない日として国民的な日となっています。左胸にポッピーをつけます。国歌を歌った人の歌声がとても綺麗でした。

授業で1番印象に残ったのは生物の実験でネズミを解剖しました。解剖自体初めて見たので少し驚きました。ネズミもあまり見たことがなかったので最初は気持ち悪かったのですが、だんだん楽しくなってきました。あと臭かったです。独特な匂いがしました。本当に面白かったです。こっちでは生物で実験をすることが多かったです。全部興味深いものでできてよかったなとも思います。

あとひとつ発音に困ったのがあってそれはキャラメルです。全然伝わらなくて少し悲しくなったのですが店員さんが「これ？」って聞いてくれて無事頼むことができました。

またナイアガラの滝に行きました。今回行ったところはナイアガラの滝を近く見えるところでした。行ったときは雨が降ってるんじゃないかってぐらい水しぶきが飛んできました。ナイアガラの滝では船を乗って近くに行ったり、滝の中かみたり、今回みたいに近くから見る方法があって面白かったです。そして今回は運が良くて、虹を見ることができました。滝と虹で神秘的だなと思いました。

留学に来て変わったことは来る前に比べてリスニング力が変わったことだと思います。聞き取りやすくなったなと感じました。けれどやっぱり話すのは多少なりとも上がったとは思いますが、かなり変わったなとは思いませんでした。私は留学に来てもっと英語を知りたいなと思ったので帰っても英語の勉強は続けたいです。もっと話せるようになりたいとも思いました。

ほんとうに3ヶ月は早くて特に最後の1ヶ月はあっという間でした。もし英語力が変わってなかったとしても人生経験として、カナダに来れてよかったです。旅行で来たとしたら少しは他文化に触れることはできると思います。けれど文化の違いがたくさん知ることは旅行では難しいと思うのでそういった点でも留学できてよかったです。貴重な3ヶ月になりました。留学は誰でもできますが高校の時にするには親のおかげでもあるので、私は両親にもとても感謝しています。こういったことが実感できる3カ月にもなりました。本当に留学に行けてよかったです。
