カナダ1年留学　Iさん

It’s been three months since I came to Canada. Every morning when I go to school, I walk on frosty grass and fallen leaves in a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, breathing white breath as I walk, but the local children only wear parkas and no jumpers yet. . . Maybe it was because of the cold weather that I got a cold and the flu in September and October, so I was worried this month as well, but it seems like I’ve finally developed a tolerance for it and I’m living a healthy life.

I recently learned that Canada retains its British culture, so some words are spelled slightly differently in English. For example, words that end in American English “-or” or “-er”, such as color, are written as “-our” or “-re” in Canada, the same as in British English. In addition to the spelling, the pronunciation of “o” is similar to “a” in American English, but in Canadian English it is pronounced similar to “o”, so when someone says “sorry”, it is pronounced as “o”. I have often noticed this, so I was a little confused about it. But my teacher is kind so I understand quickly.

Canada is very expensive, with small gummies costing about 500 yen and udon noodles costing about 2,500 yen. I want to eat a lot of Japanese convenience store food. My school has a lot of international students. So I made some friends from other countries. I bought a lip oil, fragrance, and body lotion, because it was Black Friday! I’m happy to have bought some things I wanted.

カナダに来て3ヶ月が経ちました。毎朝の登校時、2℃の中霜が降っている草や落ち葉を踏み、白い息を出して歩いているのですが、現地生の子はパーカーのみでまだまだジャンバーは着ていません。寒さのせいか9月.10月と風邪(?)、インフルエンザにかかってしまって今月も不安だったのですがやっと耐性がついたようで健康に過ごせています。

最近知ったことがあるのですが、カナダはイギリスの文化が残っているので少し英語のスペルが違う単語があります。例えばcolor→colourなど、アメリカ英語「-or」,

「-er」で終わるものはカナダではイギリス英語と同じ「-our」,「-re」と表記されます。他にもスペルだけではなく、「o」の発音がアメリカ英語では「ア」に近い音に対し、カナダでは「オ」に近い音で発音されるのでsorryを言われる時にオの主張を強いな、と感じることが多いです。

カナダは物価が高く、小さいグミが約500円、うどんが約2500円等でとても困っています、日本のコンビニのご飯を沢山食べたいです。
