イギリス1年留学　Mさん

In November, it gets very cold in the morning and at night, as well as during the day, and I always wear a shawl when I move from one classroom to another. The school grounds are large and there are several school buildings, so I often have to go outside even if it’s only for a short time. I move around with my friends, complaining about the cold and chilly weather. Physical education classes are particularly long and are held outside, so if I don’t move I freeze.

It has been a long time since half-term. This month I have made even more friends through classes and clubs and I am doing well in my studies and sports. There was a time where I had to solve the same problems as the boys who teased me at the beginning of biology class. If they didn’t understand a problem, the boys would ask me and I would answer them. They were impressed by my use of the word ‘breath’ to describe plants breathing, and they said, “That’s so beautiful! Teacher! It’s amazing!” and they passed it on to their teacher. I was very moved by their sensitivity to the words of someone they had never liked so much before, and how they found the words even more beautiful. If I had been in the boys’ shoes and heard such words, I probably would have only thought they were poetic. After that, I felt that the wall between us fell down, and we started talking sometimes in class. I think I’ve grown up a little bit, I’m not the same person I was two months ago, but I’m talking to people more.

I have GCSE exams at the end of the month, so my lessons at school are now geared towards the exams, but I am also looking forward to making mini puddings during the week of the tests.

My friend who was homestaying nearby went back to Japan the other day. We had a great time together for nearly two months playing games and going out, so it feels like there is a gaping hole in my life. We parted, promising to meet again when I return to Japan.

I still have a good relationship with my host family. I will be painting walls with my host father on Sundays at the beginning of December and will help him redecorate his house.

11月に入り、朝夜はもちろん日中もとても冷え込むようになり教室移動の際は必ずストールを身に着けています。学校の敷地が広く校舎は何棟かあり、少しの時間でも外に出ることが多いため友達と寒い寒いと言いながら移動しています。体育の授業は特に長く外にいるため動いていないと凍えてしまいます。

ハーフタイムから久しぶりの学校でした。今月になって授業やクラブを通してさらに友達が増え、勉強やスポーツも頑張れています。生物の授業で初めのほうにからかってきた男の子たちと同じ問題を解く時間がありました。分からない問題があったら男の子たちに聞かれ、答えていました。その時に私がbreathという言葉を使って植物が呼吸すると表現していたことに対して彼らは感動したらしく、とても美しいよ！先生！すごい！と先生にもそれを伝えていました。これまであまり気に入っていなかった人が発した言葉に対して、さらに言葉を美しいと感じるその感受性に私はすごく感動しました。私は男の子たちの立場になりそんな言葉を聞いてもおそらく詩的な言葉だなとしか思わなかったと思います。それから彼らとは少し感じていた壁のようなものがなくなり、授業中たまに話すようになりました。それから私も壁を作っていたのかもしれないと自分から人に話しかけることが少しですが増え、二か月前のままの私ではなく成長できたような気がします。

今月末はGCSEのテストがあるため学校の授業もテストに向けた内容になってきましたが、テストの週にはミニプディングを作る授業もあるので楽しみです。

近所にホームステイしていた友達が先日、日本に帰ってしまいました。二か月近くゲームしたりお出かけしたりと一緒に楽しい時間を過ごしていたので生活の中でぽっかり穴が開いたような感覚です。日本に帰ったらまた会うことを約束して別れました。

ホストファミリーとは変わらずいい関係を築けています。これから１２月頭の日曜日にホストファザーと壁のペインティングをし、家の模様替えを手伝う予定です。
