A new life started in September.  Not only did I enter the local school, but I also moved to a new homestay.  So, I would like to introduce my new host family and the current situation at the local school.

First, I would like to talk about my new host family.  There is another international student from Mexico besides me at my new homestay.  She was very bright and caring, so I was able to open up to  her immediately.  She is like an older sister to me now. I feel like we are real family.

Next is the local school.  There are many international students at the local school.  I heard that immaculate high school, where I entered, has few international students, but there are far more international students than in Japan.  The international students had many opportunities to gather in one classroom, so I got the impression that the international students got along well and formed a good group among the international students.  In addition, since all classes are taught in English, it is often difficult to understand.  Furthermore, the contents of the classes are often completely different from those in Japan.  As a result, even if other international students can understand to some extent, it is difficult for me.

It’s been a month since I started my new life, but there are still many things I can’t get used to, so I want to get used to this life as soon as possible by increasing my interactions with various people.

例えばAren’t you Japanese?

I went to Vancouver to see the stage as part of the school drama class. Even though my home stay town and Vancouver, where we live now, are in British Columbia, it takes nearly 5 hours one way by car. Also, although it is the same country and the same state, I was able to find a lot of different things such as the scenery and the state of people. For example, a building. There are many low buildings in my town, but there were many tall buildings such as buildings and condominiums in Vancouver like in Japan.

In terms of language, I’m struggling to distinguish between yes and no. For example, aren’t you Japanese? When asked, I say, “No, I’m Japanese,” but in English yes, I am. You have to answer. In this way, I have to answer yes and no in the opposite way to what is used in Japanese, but I tend to answer yes and no in Japanese, so I often ask my friends, “what? which?” .The school’s English classes are for international students, so I would like to absorb a lot of other things and I want to increase the amount of communication and practice it.

There are still a lot of new things in life, and I feel a big wall in terms of language, but I hope I can spend time enjoying these cultural differences. Also, Halloween and Christmas are events on a different scale than in Japan, so I would like to introduce that those differences again.
