<５th Month>

The New Year has begun. In Japan, we celebrate the New Year, but in Canada, it’s still the Christmas season until January 7th. The streets and homes are still decorated for Christmas, so it didn’t feel like the New Year had arrived. At midnight, we celebrated by eating cake and holding fireworks! Then, in January, the snow really started to fall. I was surprised by the powdery snow, something I’ve never seen in Tokyo. It’s much colder here, with strong winds, but since we mostly travel by car, I was surprised to see many people walking around without jackets. School started again earlier than in Japan.

In my technology class, we had an assignment to make a video. I teamed up with a Spanish exchange student, and we filmed a cooking video together at home over the weekend. I struggled with communicating in English at times, but it was a great experience, as I’ve never worked on a video or collaborated with friends on a project before.

The only other Japanese exchange student returned to Japan. Since we were in different schools, we didn’t meet often, but she really helped me during the times when I felt anxious in a foreign country. Before she left, we had a home party at her house. It was a gathering of exchange students, and we ate, took photos, and talked a lot. It was a fun time. There were people there from her school who I didn’t know, so I was nervous at first, but since we were all exchange students, it was easy to get along, and I made new friends. It turned out to be a very fulfilling day.

In January, they started opening the skating rink at the park near my house. My host family bought me a pair of skate shoes, and I went skating with my host sister. The park is normally just a regular park, so there was nothing to hold onto, which made it really hard! But the locals, from kids to adults, were all really good at skating, and I could really feel the difference in culture. That’s why ice hockey is so popular in Canada. My school even has ice hockey clubs for both boys and girls. There are often matches at the nearby rink, so I get a chance to watch them quite a bit.

Half of my exchange year is already over, and I’ve been thinking a lot about university entrance exams after I return to Japan. Since I haven’t been able to study as much as I’d planned, it will be difficult to take the general entrance exams. So, I’m studying for the English qualifications needed for university recommendations, while also trying to make the most of my time here by challenging myself with new experiences. 

＜５ヶ月目＞

　年が明けました。日本では新年を祝いますがカナダは年が明けても七日まではクリスマスシーズンなのでまだ街中や家中クリスマス仕様であまり年を明けたと言う実感がありませんでした。年を明けた瞬間はみんなで花火を持ちながらケーキを食べてお祝いしました♪そして一月から本格的に雪が降り始めました。東京では見ることの出来ないパウダースノーで驚きました。日本よりもはるかに寒くて風邪も強いですが基本車移動で外に出る機会がほぼ無いのでジャケット無しで過ごしている人も沢山いて驚きました。

学校は日本よりもすぐに始まりました。テクノロジーのクラスの時間にビデオを作ると言う課題があり、同じクラスを持っているスペインの留学生の子と休日に家で集まって料理をする動画を撮りました。より英語でのコミュニケーションが必要で苦戦した場面もありましたがビデオ作りをした事も友達と共同で課題をした事も無かったのでとてもいい思い出になりました。

唯一の日本人の留学生の子が帰国しました。学校が違ったためほとんど会える機会は無かったのですが、異国の地で不安な事も沢山あったので本当に助けられました。帰国の前にその子の家でホームパーティーをしました。留学生が集まって食事をしたり、写真を撮ったり沢山話したりなどとても楽しい時間を過ごしました。その子の学校の友達が集まっていたので知っている人がいなく、緊張しましたが留学生同士と言う事もありすぐに馴染めて新しい出会いの機会にもなりとても充実した1日になりました。

1月から近くの公園でスケートの開放が始まりました。ホストファミリーにスケート靴を買ってもらい、ホストシスターと一緒に行きました。普段は普通の公園なので捕まるとこなど一つもなく本当に苦戦したのですが、現地の人は子供から大人までみんな上手に滑ることができていて文化の違いを実感しました。そのためカナダではアイスホッケーが有名です。学校の部活にもあり男女問わず楽しめます。近くのリンクで試合もやっているのでよく観戦に行く機会もあります。

帰国まで半分になり、最近はよく帰国後の大学受験について考えます。1年間分の学習ができてない為一般受験を受けるのは難しいので推薦のために必要な英語の資格の勉強も並行して進めていきながら、現地にいるからこそできる事に沢山挑戦していきたいです。
