<4th Month>

In December, I had many chances to meet people. One of these was a gathering in my ESL class. At lunch, all the students brought food from their countries, and I was able to talk to many of them. Since I couldn’t find ingredients to make Japanese food, I asked my host sister from Germany to teach me how to make a German apple cake. I brought it to the event. It was interesting to see how different countries make food in different ways.

December also brought Christmas! In Canada, Christmas is celebrated more with family than in Japan. The town was full of Christmas lights, and it was exciting to walk around. Inside the houses, there were big Christmas trees and many decorations. People put their gifts under the tree, and by the 25th, the tree was full of presents. There were also many sweets, like Christmas cookies, chocolates, and cakes, which I had never seen in Japan. On Christmas Eve, we had dinner with the family, and on Christmas morning, we opened presents together. I was happy to get many gifts. There were also stockings with candies and small things inside. It was fun and different way to celebrate from in Japan.

I was surprised to learn that Christmas in Canada lasts longer than in Japan, until January 7th. The town still had Christmas lights, and they celebrated New Year’s with Christmas. There were no special New Year’s foods like osechi, so I missed them a little.

Schools had a two-week Christmas break. On the last day before the break, there were no classes, so we had breakfast together. The day before that, we made Ukrainian food as a class with the help of my teacher, who is from Ukraine. It was a lot of fun! The way people here celebrate everything with such care was very different from Japan, and I found it interesting.

＜４ヶ月目＞

　12月は沢山の人と交流する機会がありました。一つはESLのクラスでの交流会です。ランチの時間にESLの生徒みんなでそれぞれの国の食べ物を持ち寄って沢山の生徒と話すことができました。私は日本の食べ物は材料が現地にあまりなく作れなかったのでドイツからのホストシスターに教えてもらってドイツのりんごのケーキを作って持って行きました。その国によって様々な味付けの仕方があってとても興味深かったです。

そして12月はクリスマスがありました♪カナダは日本よりもクリスマスを家族で盛大に祝う文化がありました。町中の家がライトアップされて歩いているだけでもワクワクしました:)家の中には大きなツリーを飾って、その他にもたくさん装飾をして家中クリスマスの飾りでいっぱいでした。みんなそれぞれ用意したプレゼントをクリスマスツリーの下に置いて25日になる頃にはプレゼントでいっぱいになっていました。飾りつけだけでなくお菓子も用意されていました。クリスマスのデザインのクッキーやチョコレートそれにケーキなどどれも日本では見たことのないものでとても新鮮でした。24日のクリスマスイブは夜に家族で食事をして次の日の朝にプレゼントを開けるためにツリーの下の用意をしました。そして当日は朝に家族みんなで集まってプレゼントを開封しました♪みんながそれぞれプレゼントを用意してくれて沢山もらえて嬉しかったです。プレゼントとは別に靴下がありその中には沢山のお菓子や小物が入っていました。日本とは違ったプレゼントの形で楽しかったです。

カナダは日本よりもクリスマスのシーズンが長く年を越しても一月の七日まではクリスマスシーズンだと知りとても驚きましたそのため街の中はまだクリスマスのライトアップで溢れていて新年もクリスマスと共に祝いました。そして日本のように新年の食べ物が無かったので少しおせちが恋しくなりました。　

学校もクリスマス休みで2週間ほど休みです。クリスマス休みに入る前の最終日は授業がなくその代わりに生徒みんなで朝食を食べました。そのために前日にESLのクラスみんなでウクライナの料理を作りました♪私の先生がウクライナ出身なので作り方を教えてもらいながらやりました。とても楽しかったです。日本にいる時よりも全てのイベント事を大切に祝う文化がとても新鮮で興味深かったです。
